Zanzibar

My Mum came out to see me for the last 10 days of my trip to Africa. We went to Zanzibar (or the Spice Islands as they are also known) are famous for their spices, such as cloves, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and many more. A lesser known fact is that Freddie Mercury was born on Zanzibar and lived here for the first nine years or so of his life. They should however be famous for their sunsets, coz the ones that we saw were spectacular (which kept mum happy, coz she's got a thing about sunsets). I also chose this time to get Malaria (I waited until my mum was here to nurse me ; )

Our second (and most spectacular) sunset on Zanzibar. By this time, I was feeling pretty rough, but just thought that I had eaten something dodgy.

The Old dispensary, Stone Town. One of the best examples of colonial/Sultanic (?!) architecture in Zanzibar. Not all of Zanzibar looks as good as this - most of it is pretty run down.

After hanging around in Stone Town for far longer than we planned (coz of my parasitic little friends), we headed to a picture postcard beach called Kendwa - where we got to see more sunsets.

Our resort had volleyball, a bar right on the beach, a half-built Dhow (just for show I think) and a dive centre. The first day that we were there, the weather was fine and I went snorkelling (Mum didn't fancy it). Unfortunately, after that the weather took a turn for the worse and so the dive centre wasn't running any dives, so I didn't get to do any more dives : ( and Mum didn't get to do her Introduction to Scuba...

...so she just took it easy instead....

...and ate big meals - which as you can see kept her happy.

So on the 13th May, Mum and me flew back to Blighty. This is me the night before - distraught by the fact that this is going to be my last bottle of Stony.
