Kampala, Uganda

Kampala is the capital of Uganda. It is very close to the equator (I think that it's the closest capital city to the equator in the world - might be handy in a pub quiz). At the moment (November) it's the rainy season. About half the time it rains early in the morning (when I'm walking to school) and the rest of the time it rains in the afternoon (at about 2.30). And when it rains it really rains. No such thing as drizzle around here you know.

Kampala is really green, the greenest city I have ever been to. It's almost like a lost city which has been reclaimed by the jungle.

My luxurious dormitory accomodation. That's not a cobweb above the bed it's my mosquito net. There are 8 beds in the dorm, although there's rarely more than 2 people staying in it and sometimes I have it to myself.

The hut in which the Kabakas (kings of Buganda) are buried. It is the biggest hut I've ever seen (to give some idea of scale, you don't have to bend down to walk in it).

Patrick (one of the teachers at the school that I'm working in) sitting in front of the accumulated collection of spears of the Kabaka the kings themselves are buried behind the spear collection.

Some drums.

Me with Patrick's parents.

The horde of vampire bats that I have to avoid on my way to school. They have a wingspan of about 2 feet and although they look like fruitbats they feed solely on the blood of humans (no honestly, it's true ; ).
