Kenyan Coast

After a few days in Nairobi I headed for Mombasa and the Kenyan coast on Kenyan Railways overnight train service.

The views from the train were excellent and it was almost like stepping back in time to the good old days of the empire.

I was fed dinner and breakfast in the restaurant car by waiters in white jackets. It wasn't as exotic as it sounds though as the waiters jackets (and the white table cloths) had seen better days and the waiters spilt the soup and were just generally not very good at waitering. (It seemed to affect the camera too).

Fort Jesus in Mombasa. To be honest, Mombasa hasn't got that much going for it, although Fort Jesus was pretty nice. It was also extremely hot, so I didn't waste any time heading up the coast and finding a beach where I could cool off in the Indian Ocean.

I headed up the coast to Watamu, which is a bit of a resort town and is mostly full of Italians. Which is a good thing because the shops sell lots of lovely Italian and continental food. There are also beautiful palm fringed, white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. It was just as hot here and the water was actually pretty hot too, so it didn't offer much respite from the sun.

But as it was the start of the rainy season, so there were some fantastic storms.

I did some scuba diving too, on the reefs just offshore from Watamu. The fish and corals were amazingly colourful...

...and the best of the fish were the clown fish living in the ananomies - just like Nemo!
